A Storied Past

Originally commissioned by Charles and Carrie Segerstrom in 1926, "The Big House" was meticulously crafted with unparalleled attention to detail. Constructed using the finest materials—clear pine, fir, redwood, oak, and mahogany—the mansion stands as a testament to superior craftsmanship. Its rich history includes hosting esteemed guests such as President Herbert Hoover, Governor Earl Warren, and author Helen Keller. Today, the estate retains its original charm, allowing guests to step back in time while enjoying contemporary amenities.

Meet Your Hosts

Fred and Rhonda Buess standing by the Knowles Hill entrance

Fred and Rhonda were married in 1992 and brought their passion for restoration and design to Knowles Hill a few years later. Rhonda's background in graphic design shows in every cozy, curated detail of the interiors. Fred, an engineer and lifelong restorer of vintage Rolls-Royce automobiles, has a gift for bringing beautiful things back to life.

Their shared love of hospitality—and of Knowles Hill itself—is evident in every breakfast served and every guest warmly welcomed.

The Four-Legged and Feathered Welcome Committee

Knowles Hill is home to a cheerful cast of outdoor animals. Guests are often greeted by a friendly dog, a clowder of well-fed cats roaming the grounds, and—occasionally—a duck or two waddling through the garden. The exact lineup may change with time, but the warm, low-key charm of these animal residents is a constant. (For everyone’s comfort, we ask that you leave your own pets at home.)

A Tradition of Craftsmanship

Fred's father began restoring vintage Rolls-Royce cars in the 1940s and helped found the Rolls-Royce Owner’s Club in 1951. That legacy lives on today—occasionally you’ll spot one of these classics on the grounds. It’s a quiet nod to a family tradition rooted in excellence, care, and enduring beauty—just like the inn itself.
