Governor Earl Warren

Governor of California Earl Warren was a guest at Knowles Hill in 1945. He came to dedicate Columbia State Park. Warren was elected California Governor three consecutive times. As Governor he capitalized on wartime tax surpluses rather than return them to the taxpayers. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1953 by President Eisenhower and unexpectedly took the Court and the Country in a new direction. Eisenhower later said that Warren's appointment was "the biggest mistake I ever made."

Red makes a bold statement and expresses confidence. And we are confident that you will love the red corner room for two named for Knowles Hill guest, Earl Warren, Governor of California and later, Chief Justice of the United State Supreme Court. This second floor room overlooks the lover's fountain, the rhododendron garden and one of the largest Japanese maples we have ever seen, and also has views of old downtown Sonora and 'Big Hill' beyond. It features a very comfortable red and white settee and a small table. The furnishings are original antique Eastlake Victorian with toile fabrics on the high queen bed and windows. Linens are high thread-count Egyptian cotton. Amenities include a walk-in closet with ironing board and iron, and a TV with DVD player.

Inside the Earl Warren Room

The green, black, gold and white mosaic marble tile in the bath is the most beautiful flooring in the entire house, and the shower/bath has all of its original fittings. The Earl Warren Room can be upgraded into a suite for four by adding the optional 'Boys Room' with a private adjoining door.
